Art Gallery at the Academy is an onsite gallery located in Academy of Music on Main Street's state-of-the-art facility in Spotswood, NJ. The art gallery was conceived by Melody Blasenheim, Academy of Music on Main Street's owner and director, as a way of supporting local artists and taking advantage of the many 12 foot high walls in the facility. "People are excited about this gallery. It's a place where people can purchase high-quality art at much lower cost than commercial art galleries. In the setting of the music academy, people's experience of what the art has to offer is deepened. Music and art go together."
The Art Gallery at the Academy presents four shows annually, each ten to eleven weeks in duration. The gallery's main display space is in the main waiting area in the front of the building, consisting of one unobstructed 31' x 12' wall and an adjoining 4 1/2' wall at the far end of the waiting area.
Please visit us and enjoy the art on display. All artwork on display is available for purchase.

July 12 - September 29, 2009 - Bill Giacalone (oil paintings)

Academy of Music on Main Street is pleased to announce a new show at its Art Gallery at The Academy in Spotswood, NJ. Oil paintings by Bill Giacalone will be displayed with an opening reception on Sunday, July 12, 2009, from 1pm to 3pm, which will include a gallery talk by the artist. Mr. Giacalone’s oil painting(s) of musicians will be on display. In addition, he will be selling 8 x 10" prints of the works on display, for $95 and greeting cards at $5. He works in both oil and acrylic.
Melody Blasenheim, director of the academy, says, “Mr. Giacalone’s paintings of musicians are moving. The music themes are a perfect subject that will inspire our patrons. We are happy to have him display in our gallery.”
“Mid century modern style is in a revival, and Bill’s musician paintings have tremendous appeal with their vibrant color, powerful shapes and nod to cubism. Musicians shouldn’t miss this one, exclaims Kevan Lunney, curator of the gallery. Says Giacalone, “These paintings of musicians are probably the result of growing up in the jazz era and with big band music. When I was a kid, I played the saxophone but I was very bad at it!”
Bill Giacalone has been a painter, illustrator and sculpture for over fifty years. His paintings have been displayed in galleries in New York, New Jersey, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Tulsa and Barcelona, Spain. He was born in New York City and showed artistic aptitude early as six years old when his drawings were being published in the Modern School newspaper, Voice of the Children.
Bill married in 1955 and raised three children in Highland Park, NJ. During that period he earned his living as a commercial artist, illustrator and art director. He painted frequently during this period, inspired by the colorful, avante garde art produced in the mid 1960s.
Giacalone's most prolific period started in 1977. Since then, he has painted hundreds of works in a style that has constantly evolved and matured. His studio is in Highland Park, N.J. According to Giacalone, “I work in vivid colors. The object is to create movement, vibration by juxtaposition of color. The interplay at the color boundaries is as important to my work as the flow of the design itself. My intention in my work is to create a painting that exudes sensuality, voluptuousness and sexuality, not explicitly, but not subtly either.”
